Second Breath was established in late March of 2020 with the main goal of designing a super low-cost ventilator built with readily available components to help combat the COVID-19 crisis. Realizing the need for ventilators that would rapidly rise during the peak of coronavirus related hospital admissions, we refocused our engineers and manufacturing processes normally dedicated to the automotive industry. In the span of 3 weeks, we went from concept to production. We produced our first prototype in 1 week, made 7 design revisions in the next, and received FDA approval for the Second Breath Mark 1 Pneumatic Rapid Response Ventilator on April 13, 2020. University Hospitals intensivist Mada Helou acted as consulting physician, and the product’s development was funded by a Cleveland Foundation grant. We worked with local hospitals including the Cleveland Clinic, Akron Children’s Hospital and and Akron City Hospital to test the new product and prove its functionality and durability.
